Meet the Team


Action Renewables is the lead authority on renewable energy in Northern Ireland. We are a not-for-profit organisation, a private company, limited by guarantee, reporting to a Management Board consisting of an Executive Chairman and Non-Executive Directors.

Michael Doran :Director

Michael Doran

Director

Michael Doran is the Managing Director of Action Renewables. Michael is a Chartered Surveyor, having graduated from the University of Salford in 1978.  He is also a Chartered Environmentalist, a qualified Project Manager, and  a Member of the Institute of Directors. He is a Director of the Irish Bioenergy Association, and a Director of AEBIOM, the European Biomass Association. Michael is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the company and specialises in bioenergy, renewable energy policy development, and capacity building in developing countries.

Terry Waugh :Deputy Director

Terry Waugh

Deputy Director

As Deputy Director of Action Renewables, Terry takes a lead role in the marketing aspects of the company, in tendering opportunities and in developing the Action Renewables Association. The  Association has over 25 company members, across a range of business sectors. Terry specializes in EU funding opportunities, and is currently managing five INTERREG IVc programmes including two Atlantic Area Projects as Lead Partner; BATTERIE and REPUTE. Terry started work with Northern Ireland Electricity where he gained over twenty years experience of the energy industry, and he was the Customer Relations Manager for NIE’s Transmission and Distribution business before moving to Action Renewables.. Terry has a Batchelors Degree in Business and Finance, a Masters of Business Administration, and an Open University accreditation on Energy for a Sustainable Future.

Annette Herty :Office Manager

Annette Herty

Office Manager

Annette Herty is Action Renewables’ Office Manager and has been with the company since 2006. Annette has a wealth of experience in team management and customer service. She previously worked with British Airways as Team Manager in both sales and customer service. Prior to this she provided clerical support for the headquarters of the Eastern Health & Social Services Board in Belfast.

Business Developers

 

Rachel Sankannawar :Business Development and Tenders Manager

Rachel Sankannawar

Business Development and Tenders Manager

As Action Renewables’ Business Development and Tenders Manager, Rachel is involved in developing and managing new business, tendering and the project management of private contracts. Rachel supports the strategic development of Action Renewables and manages business development both in Northern Ireland, the UK and Europe.

Rachel is key in developing Action Renewables services in the ROC, RHI and ESOS markets. Her work also involves writing, managing and submitting bids tailored to the requirements of the tender. Rachel is active in managing consortia and the writing and submission of European Project applications under the Horizon 2020 and INTERREG frameworks. Rachel also oversees and steers the management of the Action Renewables Association and key PR activities.

Rachel is a strong advocate for renewable energy and sustainability and has experience of working abroad in Africa, China and India. Rachel holds degree in Law from Newcastle University, and a Masters degree in Leadership for Sustainable Development from Queen’s University Belfast. Rachel is a keen member of IEMA and Women in Business.

Project Managers

 

Jonathan Buick :Head of Projects

Jonathan Buick

Head of Projects

Jonathan Buick is head of projects in Action Renewables. He has over ten years experience in energy and environmental consultancy, waste management and renewable energy technologies. Jonathan is an authority on government support measures for renewable energy, such as the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation and the Feed-in Tariff in Great Britain. His technical and economic expertise in renewable energy spans all technologies, but particularly wind, anaerobic digestion and solar thermal, and this expertise has led to him providing training and advice to a wide range of stakeholders, from the farming sector in Northern Ireland to the Government of Azerbaijan. Jonathan has a MSc in Environmental Management and Policy and is a Chartered Scientist.

Dawn Murphy :Senior Project Manager

Dawn Murphy

Senior Project Manager

Dawn Murphy joined the AR team as an Advisor and Community Information Officer in April 2006 providing renewable energy advice to householders and community groups. Dawn is now Project Manager for the MCS certification department of Action Renewables. She is also responsible for Quality Management and website development. Dawn previously worked as an environmental consultant and holds a masters degree in Environmental Management, is an associate member and registered environmental auditor with the Institute of Environmental Management and assessment. Alex Bookless :Senior Project Manager

Alex Bookless

Senior Project Manager

Alex Bookless is a Senior Project Manager in Action Renewables. His primary expertise resides in handling Ofgem accreditation, claiming and trading of NIROC’s, and negotiating PPA’s for renewable energy (RE) generating clients. Alex has developed the expert knowledge and connections to assure that these RE generators are best represented in terms of value, service, and with the regulatory bodies.  Alex also manages the delivery of a wide variety of technical projects including bespoke feasibility studies and energy efficiency audits and reports, while managing existing clients & liaising with potential customers to develop new business.  Alex was the lead on an INTERREG project Water Asset Renewable Energy Solutions (WARES) which Action Renewables partnered in, and has had input in a number of other European projects. Alex is a passionate advocate for sustainable energy and holds a BSc Honours in Geography and an MSc Hons in Sustainable Design, both earned from Queens University Belfast.

Mark Compston :Senior Project Manager

Mark Compston

Senior Project Manager

As a Senior Project Manager, Mark manages the delivery of a number of renewable energy services, including Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) accreditation, provision of feasibility studies to businesses and other energy management services to support the renewable energy industry in Northern Ireland and further afield. Mark has over 12 years’ experience in the renewable energy industry and previously held a number of renewable energy related technical positions in Kingspan Environmental, primarily in relation to its solar thermal products. Mark holds a BA(Hons) Business Studies degree and is a Chartered Manager.

William Deane :Project Manager

William Deane

Project Manager

William Deane joined the Action Renewables team in March 2015 as an Assistant Project Manager. He is working on Ofgem accreditation for domestic and commercial renewable energy generating clients. He will also be assisting the technical team with site visits, feasibility studies and will be involved with ROC trading. William has previously worked with the electricity supplier Budget Energy LTD as their Renewables Project Coordinator and was responsible for the managing of their renewables portfolio. William holds a degree in Environmental Management from the University of Northumbria, Newcastle.

Aaron Kernohan :Project Manager

Aaron Kernohan

Project Manager

Aaron Kernohan is an Assistant Project Manager at Action Renewables. Aaron graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast in 2011 with a BSc Environmental Planning. On graduating Aaron spent two years as an intern research assistant in the NI Department of the Environment working on sourcing competitive European Funding for Energy and Climate Change projects as part of the cross-departmental Barroso Task Force. Subsequently Aaron spent one and a half years as a consultant with PWC working on various projects with different clients including as part of the Government Services procurement team where he helped in assessing global climate change project funding applications and drafted contracts and statements of work for the successful bidders.

Mark Corrigan :Project Manager

Project Manager

Mark Corrigan is a Project Manager on the Action Renewables Tech Team. Mark is responsible for the management of a significant Solar PV contract worth £1.2m for Fold Housing Association. Mark is also the key project manager for the new Northern Periphery and Arctic project called GREBE. In addition Mark is a member of the RHI team and helps in the development of the Renewable Heat Incentive Accreditation service which assists our clients to gain accreditation from Ofgem. Mark holds a BSc in Land Use and Environmental Management and a degree in Energy, Environment & Sustainability from Queen’s University Belfast.

Bernadette Convery :Assistant Project Manager

Bernadette Convery

Assistant Project Manager

Bernadette joined Action Renewables in October 2015, she was first employed as temporary staff on the ROCs team and was then offered a permanent position as an Assistant Project Manager. To date she has been collecting and submitting the meter readings for our large scale generators to secure monthly ROC claims. She will also be assisting with various projects at Action Renewables, including the Ofgem Accreditation process and ROC Trading Services. Bernadette holds a BSc in Geography from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and a Masters in Sustainable Energy from University College Dublin (UCD).

Orlaith McVeigh joined the Action Renewables team in August 2015 as an Assistant Project Manager on the Tech Team. Orlaith has been working on the recent ROC banding change for Small Scale PV (SSPV), assisting clients through the OFGEM Accreditation process. She is also the acting facilitator for the IrBEA Energy Crops Executive, a subgroup that has been developed to achieve progress in the energy crops industry across Ireland, both North and South.  Orlaith holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography and a masters in Environmental Engineering from Queens University, Belfast.

Gareth Lyness :Assistant Project Manager

Gareth Lyness

Assistant Project Manager

Gareth Lyness joined Action Renewables in July 2015 after attaining a bachelor's degree in Business with Accounting, he was first employed as temporary staff on the Small Scale PV team and was then offered a permanent position as an Assistant Project Manager. Upon joining Action Renewables, Gareth has worked closely on securing ROC accreditation for Small Scale PV for over 3000 clients in Northern Ireland. In addition to this Gareth also works with accounts and administration, providing assistance on end of year accounts as well as assisting in the completion of various European Projects.

Irene Robinson :Accountant

Irene Robinson

Accountant

Irene Robinson joined Action Renewables as Accountant in 2007 and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014.   She holds a First class Honours degree in Economics and Accounting, a Masters in Accounting, and a Postgraduate Diploma in IT Applications.   She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and a Member of the Institute of Professional Financial Managers. Her role is to oversee the financial management and administration functions of the company and to advise the Board on financial strategy and planning.

Stuart Best :Project Support Assistant

Stuart Best

Project Support Assistant

Stuart joined Action Renewables in September 2016 and will be undertaking a 1 year internship. He is studying a degree in Land Use and Environmental Management at Queen’s University Belfast, and as part of this he has to complete a work placement.  He will be working as a business development assistant and will have a variety of responsibilities, including the organisation of the 2017 Action Renewables Awards Luncheon.  Stuart will also take an active role in promoting the company through a variety of marketing strategies, both in the NI marketplace and also further afield, and generally improving Action’s business potential.

Shane Hanna joined Action Renewables in August 2016 as part of his degree programme. Shane is studying Land use and Environmental Management at The Queen’s University Belfast and is completing a one year internship with us. Adam joined Action Renewables in September 2016 as part of his degree programme. Adam is studying Electronic Engineering at University of Ulster Jordanstown and is completing a one semester placement with us. Ada joined Action Renewables in November 2016 to undertake a six month internship. As a qualified Engineer specialising in renewable energy and having studied an Engineering degree at the University of the Basque Country, Ada is working on various projects and will have a variety of responsibilities, including feasibility studies.
